Showing a random mix from every origin. Pick a gender, origin, or letter above to narrow it down.
How to use this generator
Pick a gender, one or more origins or styles, and (optionally) a starting letter, then hit Generate. Every name comes with its meaning and cultural origin, so you can build a shortlist that actually says something you like. Nothing you enter here is sent anywhere — the whole thing runs in your browser.
A note on scope
This generator currently draws from English, French, Italian, Spanish, Irish & Celtic, Scandinavian, Greek, Hebrew & Biblical, Slavic, Arabic, African, Indian, Indonesian, Thai, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese naming traditions. We're always looking to expand the list, if there's a tradition you'd like to see added, let us know.
How the filters actually work
Each name in the list carries a few tags: a gender association, one or more origins or naming traditions, and a starting letter. When you pick filters, the generator simply narrows the full list down to names matching every tag you selected, then pulls a random shortlist from what is left. Picking more filters narrows the pool further, so if a combination feels too specific and keeps returning the same handful of names, try loosening one filter (dropping the starting letter, or widening to more than one origin) to open the pool back up.
Where the meanings come from, and their limits
Name meanings and origins here reflect commonly cited etymology for each name, the kind you would find in general baby-name references. Etymology for names is not always a settled science: many names have disputed or multiple plausible origins, meanings can shift across regions and eras, and the same name spelled differently can carry different histories in different cultures. Treat the meaning as an interesting starting point and a conversation piece, not a certified fact, and do your own research if a name's cultural or religious significance matters a lot to your decision.
How to use a generated shortlist
A random generator is best used to surface names you would not have thought of yourself, not as a final decision-maker. A workable approach: generate a batch, save anything that catches your eye (even if you are not sure yet), then narrow that saved list down over a few days or weeks. Say names out loud with your last name, check how initials look together, and consider how the name works with common nicknames. Most people find their favorite names shift over time as they live with a shortlist rather than picking on the first pass.
A quick checklist for choosing a name
- Generate a batch and save any name that catches your eye, even a maybe
- Say full names and initials out loud before settling on anything
- Check common nicknames the name might get shortened to
- Look up cultural or religious significance if the origin matters to you
- Give yourself more than one sitting; favorites often shift with time
Frequently asked questions
Are the name meanings on this tool always accurate?
They reflect commonly cited etymology, but name origins are not always settled or single-sourced. Many names have disputed or multiple plausible meanings, so treat them as a helpful starting point rather than a definitive fact.
Why does my filtered search keep showing the same few names?
Stacking several filters at once (gender, origin, and starting letter together) narrows the pool quickly. Try dropping one filter, most often the starting letter, to widen the results.
Is anything I type into this tool saved or sent anywhere?
No. The generator runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you select or generate is sent to a server or stored anywhere outside your own device.
